This Raku vase was hand made by me and has a wonderful dramatic and angled quality to it! It boasts a blanket of carbon around its waist and peppered throughout its crown, which commands the eyes' attention. The contrasting patterning begins on the upper half of this piece and slowly dissipates.
Naked Raku is an unpredictable firing process that gives each piece its unique surface. Before firing, I coat the pot in a special slip that cracks as it dries. When the piece reaches about 1500°F, it’s pulled from the kiln and placed into a smoking chamber, where fire and carbon react with the clay. The slip then flakes away, revealing dramatic black-and-white patterns that are burned into the clay itself.
Because the process is so volatile, every pot emerges with completely unique, unrepeatable designs. I finish each one by carefully cleaning, sealing, and waxing the surface to protect the patterns and enhance their depth and shine.
