This piece is a tactile reflection on the complex relationship between dyslexia and the written word. For many, a book is a vessel for literal storytelling. For dyslexic individuals, the experience of literacy is often a journey of finding connection through unconventional paths.
Through hand-stacking and tearing thousands of individual ceramic "pages," I have translated the act of reading into a physical ritual. The sculpture follows a traditional narrative flow, beginning at the top left and concluding at the bottom right, mirroring the left-to-right movement of the eye when reading. Like a literal written progression in a book, these “petrified pages” remain in the order that they were created, rendering a visually tangible story arch.
The physical creation of this piece spanned the same duration it might take a typical reader to finish a novel. In that time parallel, I explore my own personal affinity with books and literacy with an emphasis on the aesthetic components. In this work, the text has vanished, leaving behind the raw, rhythmic beauty of the medium. It is an invitation to love a book not just for what it says, but for the profound, patient process of engaging with it physically.
The wooden frame is made out of cherry wood and was also custom made by me to fit the piece precisely. I singed this frame and the wooden panel with a torch to achieve the desired tone to match the dark, dramatic and inviting ceramic focal-point.
The last photo is a rendering of this piece to provide an idea of what it looks like in person.
